The language of cleansing is the sponsors' own. The proem to the Prochiron speaks of "the breadth of the laws which we have recently cleansed", the proem to the Eisagoge says they "cleansed everything remaining", and the Vita Basilii describes Basil "cleansing the multitude of the valid" laws. What is modern convention is treating "the Cleansing of the Ancient Laws" as the programme's proper name, which is why the scholarship keeps it in quotation marks. See the essay record.
