Founded 9 March 2023 and incorporated in Nevada. Merged with X Corp in March 2025 under a holding company, then acquired by SpaceX on 2 February 2026, after which its communications were rebranded SpaceXAI. Wikidata now labels the entity "SpaceXAI" and describes it as a division of SpaceX.

There is an accident of timing worth recording. The essay was published on 22 February 2026 and uses xAI as its example of accountability working: a company with a reputation and something to lose, held responsible for Grok. Three weeks before publication, that company had been absorbed into another one.

The essay's own argument is that accountability requires a persistent identity for consequences to attach to. Its worked example of a durable, accountable entity changed identity while the piece was being written, which is either a coincidence or the thesis demonstrating itself.
